Can People Find My Home Address Through My IP Address?
Many people on the internet ask this question, so today; I am going to answer it for once and for all.
So… Can people find out who you are through your IP Address? The simple answer is yes. But first, let’s understand what an IP Address is, the different types of IP Addresses, and then how people can find out your home address through your IP.
What Is An IP Address?
Under IPv4, an IP Address is a bunch of numbers that is in the format of XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX. For example: 124.136.56.164. However, since the world is running short of IP Addresses (we’ll probably run out by the end of 2011), IPv6 has been created in which IP Addresses are displayed as group of four hexadecimal digits separated by colons. For example: 2001:db8:1f70::999:de8:7648:6e8. For more information about IPv6, visit Wikipedia.
What are IP Addresses Used For?
IP Addresses are used to connect computers to each other. For example, your ISP will assign you either a static or dynamic IP Address which you will use to connect your computer or home network to the internet. If your home network has more than one computer in it, your ISP will not assign each of your computers an IP Address. Your router will assign each computer in your network a LAN IP. This IP Address is a little different as it will usually start with a 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x.
Static IP? Dynamic IP? What’s the Difference?
Basically a Static IP Address never changes, whereas a Dynamic IP Address does change. Businesses usually require a static IP Address so they can host servers such as web servers, so when you visit a domain name, the DNS server (Domain Name Server) finds out what the IP Address is and directs you to that server. Imagine if you had a dynamic IP Address that always changes, you wouldn’t be able to locate that server or website.
Most residential customers will be assigned dynamic IP Addresses by their ISP. The reason being is that they don’t need to run servers and it’s easier to manage.
What’s better – Dynamic or Static?
It’s really depends on what you require as each have their pro’s and con’s. For example, if you want to host a web server, a static IP Address will be better suited, but a dynamic IP will be better if you constantly get blocked by a firewall as you can reset your modem and get a new IP Address and re-access the site. But you can’t do that with a static IP Address as your IP Address remains the same.
So can people find out my home address through my IP Address?
If someone wants to find out where you live, first, they will need to know your IP Address and the date and time when you accessed something (it’s easy to get, read below). Every time you visit a website, the website would probably record your IP Address. That being said, to identify you from the other 10000 visitors can be a bit tricky, so if you log into an account, they will most probably have your username or address recorded so they can associate your account details to your IP Address.
But by someone just having your IP Address, it is possible to track down who you are from your IP Address, but for privacy issues, not many people can do it. If someone wants to find your address, they will need a court order or a warrant to access the information from your ISP. With this, your the ISP can lookup who used what particularly ISP at a given time and date. They will then look up your billing and account details to find out what address you have.
Also, each ISP and countries are assigned with a particular IP range, thus you can use services like Trasir to find out who your ISP is and what country and region you are from.
So that is how people can find your address from your IP Address. Please keep in mind, to find legally get your personal details from your IP Address, they will need to go through some form of court order to receive permission to get these details.
Please be aware, that there maybe people who work with these agencies (ISP, Police etc) that may be able to attain these details through inside information.
So Where Do I Find My IP Address? What is my IP?
It is very easy to find your IP Address, and if I go to a services like CanYouSeeMe.org it will get my IP Address for me and display it. When you visit it on another computer on another network, it will show you your IP Address you are using to connect to the internet. Other services like You Get Signal will show a geophysical map of your location in which your IP Address is assigned, which can be used as an extremely useful tool to track IP Addresses and to trace IP locations.
IP Addresses Can Be Disguised
It is important to note, that IP addresses can be spoofed. Someone in one country, can mask their IP address to show that they are in another country. When someone does this, it makes it much more difficult to track where that person is actually located. I suggest you read “How To Use a Fake IP Address & Mask Yourself Online” and “6 Tips On How To Unblock A Web Page From Behind A Firewall“.
Actuly a person who is making a fake id on fb n he msged me that he will make a dirty pic of my fnd with the help of photoshop.the person using the id from any cyber cafe.pz tell me how cn we catch him?if he upload dirty pic then is it posibal to know, from where the pic had made?
There are services that can find the find the original file upload. I think Google has a similar public service, and I think Facebook and Microsoft are in talks of having one just for themselves.
But you can’t really find out who made the pic, only the first place it was uploaded.
Actuly a person make a fake id n msgd me that he will upload a dirty pic of my fnd on fb n he told me,he is using this id from cyber cafe.if he upload the pic then how can i catch him?pz gv me solution.
Use my contact form to send me an email, and I will let you know of a new service I am creating which could help you.
how to get fb acnt ip add?
Did you get the email I sent you?
Sry dear i m nt geting u.u jst simply answer me that is it posibal or nt to catch someone who is using fb n upload pic from cyber cafe.
It’s possible, but it’s not as simple as reading a screen on the name.
Like I said before, you have to gather your evidence, and see if you can track down the internet cafe.
The likeliness of finding out who the person is is very low though.
Is it posibal to knw that from which computer the pitcher has been made?
What pitcher?
i was talking to a guy who claims to have my ip address and threatens that he will get my home address and then come my home. i need to know is it possible for him to know my home address. the site i logged into is http://www.chatrooms.org.in/.
what should i do?
Block them and don’t talk to them?
I’ve answered this question many times, so please read what’s on the page.
Hi, One of my family members is in a bit of trouble.
She made an anonymous comment on someones blog (no threats just name calling etc) she did this on a IPod connected to her wireless modem. the person that the comments were about then went crazy and went to the police.someone they knew somehow got an IP address with an exact unit number, street everything only that the home address they got is no where near where my cousin lives (over 500kms away).
Just wondering why they got this random address (she has never even been in the area)
Also if they can find her actual home address? And if being on the iPod and wireless modem will decrease the chances of anyone finding her real address.
Thank you!
Hi Tay,
This is a perfect example of why it’s hard to find someone’s home address from the IP address. All they did was visit a site that tells you more information about IP addresses and who owns them.
This address would have more of a chance being your ISP address, or the middle of some town to which the IP address was registered in.
And if you write comment on a Blog, especially a WordPress Blog, IP addresses are recorded.
Ok, i searched my cousins IP address and I also got the same city that the people trying to find her got, also it said that she is connected to optus. she did post on a blog so what i need to know is if there is anyway that these people can get her home address or town from either ringing optus and telling them the IP address of my cousin or asking the blog that my cousin posted on or if to get that information they need a court order?
thanks so much for your help.
I don’t think Optus will release that information, but you never know, they could because they have it. It really depends on their policy if they are willing to release that information without a court order.
if you can see someone accessed your gmail acct can you take legal action with the IP address? Nothing appears to have been done but concerned someone was in my email several times over a 4 hour period.
Does law enforcement get involved in this sort of thing??
I suggest you change your password and contact a lawyer or the police to see if you can pursue this matter.
Hi there, could it be possible that someone is spying at you when your IP address does not match your actual home address?
The address shown was 591 km away which is 10 hours and 30 minutes away from the actual home address. What could this possibly mean?
Thank you sir.
No. Please read through the comments because I have answered your question previously.

hi there
im wondering if i send an email from my home computer can someone track my home address from my IP which shows in the email?
I know someone who use to work at a network administrator and am worried he might be able to track where i live if i send him an email
It’s possible. He could view the source of the email with IP addresses and use the lookup tools to find more information.
But please read my answers to other similar questions.
If you want to send him an email, why don’t you consider using a disposable email address?
Google that term for some examples such as this http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/mailnesia-anonymous-disposable-email/
I went on someone’s tumblr and they said they have my ip address, and they showed it me and it was the right one, can they do anything? Then I reset my router which gave me a new ip address, can they still trace me? Or hack me or anything? Please help! I’m from UK and these people are from America so I was just wondering. :/
I wouldn’t be worried about it. Every website you visit, your IP address will be recorded. Otherwise, the web server hosting the website wouldn’t know where to send the pages and content you requested.
Sites also record IP addresses when you perform tasks on websites such as purchasing a product or leaving a comment. By leaving the comment you did, I know your IP address.
Everytime you visit a website, more information other than your IP address is also given. Such as these http://www.jackcola.org/faq?catid=2&faqid=15
Hi Jack,
Someone stole a private video off my pc and posted it online and sent it to friends and family. The damage has already been done but this person is still making my life a nightmare. I recently found out that he has created a fake profile with my name and pics and posted the videos there as well. I am depressed with this whole situtation specially because it has a direct impact both on my personal and professional life. I really need to find out who this person is for sure. I thought about contacting the website directly, going to the police or finding a lawyer to request a court order to request the IP address. Are you able to advise what is the best way to proceed in this case? Would I be able to find out who this person is by obtaining the IP address for the user from the website and then requesting a court order to get the IPS? I hope this makes sense. Really appreciate your help.
Lucas
Hi Lucas,
First thing I would do is use the report function on all the sites you see video, and for Google Search results.
Also, see if you can send a message to the sites contacts to see if they can provide you the details.
If the police or no one wants to help you, you can always pay some money and get a court order to get those sites to provide you the IP addresses and for ISP’s to reveal who the owner of the IP address is.
You might also want to set up Google Alerts for certain keywords (like your name) that the video will be posted on, so you can see where a new copy of it has been uploaded.
The other thing you can do is public post saying the video is false or fake or what ever and say the person uploading it does not have permissions.
Hope this helps. Any further questions, let me know.
Jack Cola,
I was just reading your post because I wanted to know some more about IPs. Then I saw al the replies and had to tell you this:
Unbelievable how you keep up with these people. You remain polite and helpfull with every question that’s asked. I could learn from you.
All the best.
Lars
Hi Lars,
Thanks for the kind words.
Hopefully you learnt some thing about IP Addresses after reading this.
If you have any questions, just let me know.
Jack
i had a friend whom iused to chat and talk thru fb and chat..recently he messed out with me.now i fear using my ip he hacks my fb and so something?what should i do
He won’t use your IP address to hack your Facebook, because it’s near impossible to get someones IP address from Facebook.
The best thing to do is to secure your account.
Going to http://www.facebook.com/hacked should help you secure it.
If you want to block this person (so to them, it appears like you have never joined Facebook), visit there profile page, and on the settings button next to “Messages” on there profile, click Report/Block and block them.
Hope this helps
what can an enemy do with our ip address does he can hack our facebook or other sites.me my brother and family using net using wifi.i have a friend who recently turned my enemy
Usually they can’t do anything.

My tor browser makes me say im in the middle of the ocean 😛
Isn’t that the beauty of using TOR… to protect your real IP address and location?
It is highly unlikely for anyone to find your geographical address from your IP. If you have a router the IP address is that of your router, and if that is connected to the internet from another server, then outsiders will see that ‘other’ IP address.
The only way is to get your postal address from your IP address provider, and as Jack rightly states, that requires a warrant or a court order.
IP ‘lookup’ is useful to find out if this offer is really from the USA, the UK, Russia or China and if you may be getting scammed!
I write a lot about IP addresses and find it amazing that people know less about them than their telephone numbers – they are very similar systems.
Your phone number is your IP address, your handset is your computer and the wires or wireless distribution are the internet. The web (WWW) are all those phone numbers (IP addresses) attached to the system that you can access.
Your works main number is the router (that’s why everybody will find your works main number rather than your extension when they check who called, just as your router address is what others see on lookup.) That’s also why IP proxies hide your own IP address
You should all really get familiar with IP and read all that Jack is offering you.
Cheers,
Pete

Hi Pete,
Thanks for reading my comments and providing an good analogy. You can’t get much better than comparing a telephone number to an IP address.
To go one step further, the DNS (Domain Name System) is just a phonebook.
Thanks again for your comment.
Im wondering. If you talked to someone on an email that you deleted can they find out any info?
Yes, they can still find out some info because you sent them the email and it’s already in their inbox.
Well i was on a video chat with this guy and he scared me by telling my he found my ip address and he said he will find me now im really scared and dont know what to do :no-comments:
It’s unlikely that he will do anything, or find any other info out about it.
i don’t know my postal code and i need it 🙁 👿
Ask a neighbour, or search for your suburb on Google Maps, or Google and it should tell you your postcode.
