Can People Find My Home Address Through My IP Address?
Many people on the internet ask this question, so today; I am going to answer it for once and for all.
So… Can people find out who you are through your IP Address? The simple answer is yes. But first, let’s understand what an IP Address is, the different types of IP Addresses, and then how people can find out your home address through your IP.
What Is An IP Address?
Under IPv4, an IP Address is a bunch of numbers that is in the format of XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX. For example: 124.136.56.164. However, since the world is running short of IP Addresses (we’ll probably run out by the end of 2011), IPv6 has been created in which IP Addresses are displayed as group of four hexadecimal digits separated by colons. For example: 2001:db8:1f70::999:de8:7648:6e8. For more information about IPv6, visit Wikipedia.
What are IP Addresses Used For?
IP Addresses are used to connect computers to each other. For example, your ISP will assign you either a static or dynamic IP Address which you will use to connect your computer or home network to the internet. If your home network has more than one computer in it, your ISP will not assign each of your computers an IP Address. Your router will assign each computer in your network a LAN IP. This IP Address is a little different as it will usually start with a 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x.
Static IP? Dynamic IP? What’s the Difference?
Basically a Static IP Address never changes, whereas a Dynamic IP Address does change. Businesses usually require a static IP Address so they can host servers such as web servers, so when you visit a domain name, the DNS server (Domain Name Server) finds out what the IP Address is and directs you to that server. Imagine if you had a dynamic IP Address that always changes, you wouldn’t be able to locate that server or website.
Most residential customers will be assigned dynamic IP Addresses by their ISP. The reason being is that they don’t need to run servers and it’s easier to manage.
What’s better – Dynamic or Static?
It’s really depends on what you require as each have their pro’s and con’s. For example, if you want to host a web server, a static IP Address will be better suited, but a dynamic IP will be better if you constantly get blocked by a firewall as you can reset your modem and get a new IP Address and re-access the site. But you can’t do that with a static IP Address as your IP Address remains the same.
So can people find out my home address through my IP Address?
If someone wants to find out where you live, first, they will need to know your IP Address and the date and time when you accessed something (it’s easy to get, read below). Every time you visit a website, the website would probably record your IP Address. That being said, to identify you from the other 10000 visitors can be a bit tricky, so if you log into an account, they will most probably have your username or address recorded so they can associate your account details to your IP Address.
But by someone just having your IP Address, it is possible to track down who you are from your IP Address, but for privacy issues, not many people can do it. If someone wants to find your address, they will need a court order or a warrant to access the information from your ISP. With this, your the ISP can lookup who used what particularly ISP at a given time and date. They will then look up your billing and account details to find out what address you have.
Also, each ISP and countries are assigned with a particular IP range, thus you can use services like Trasir to find out who your ISP is and what country and region you are from.
So that is how people can find your address from your IP Address. Please keep in mind, to find legally get your personal details from your IP Address, they will need to go through some form of court order to receive permission to get these details.
Please be aware, that there maybe people who work with these agencies (ISP, Police etc) that may be able to attain these details through inside information.
So Where Do I Find My IP Address? What is my IP?
It is very easy to find your IP Address, and if I go to a services like CanYouSeeMe.org it will get my IP Address for me and display it. When you visit it on another computer on another network, it will show you your IP Address you are using to connect to the internet. Other services like You Get Signal will show a geophysical map of your location in which your IP Address is assigned, which can be used as an extremely useful tool to track IP Addresses and to trace IP locations.
IP Addresses Can Be Disguised
It is important to note, that IP addresses can be spoofed. Someone in one country, can mask their IP address to show that they are in another country. When someone does this, it makes it much more difficult to track where that person is actually located. I suggest you read “How To Use a Fake IP Address & Mask Yourself Online” and “6 Tips On How To Unblock A Web Page From Behind A Firewall“.
I had a problem with a purchase online and figured the person i was dealing with was a scammer. They recently sent out an apology email and because I was so angry my transaction didnt go ahead I replied back saying “I hope they get what is coming to them and that everyone gets their money back for items they paid for and Never received” .. They then replied and said they are going to report my IP address to the police. If this is true, what can the police do with my IP Address. #Concerned ..
If they are a scammer, it is unlikely that they will report your IP address to the police. Because if they do, you could dob them in for being a scammer because they have to reveal their identity as well.
So, I think they are bluffing, especially when most people who report this thought of thing, the police don’t know how to handle it (just read the comments above).
Then again, this is only my opinion, I can’t fully judge because I don’t know all the information or who the person you are dealing with is.
Your IP address can be used to find the approximate geographical address of your server or your router, depending on where your final internet connection is made.
It cannot be used to find your postal address. The geographical location provided online from my IP address ranges from Essex in the UK (140 miles away) to Caerphilly in Wales (20 miles away)!
To find your IP, Google ‘My IP address’ and take a note of it. Then Google ‘http://whatismyipaddress.com/ip-lookup/’ and you will the geographical location provided.
Nobody can find your home address unless they are in the CID or FBI! You have nothing to worry about.
The police will do nothing – in fact, they are more likely to go for the scammer! The police cannot affect your IP address in any way. Why not unplug your router if you have one, and then start it up again. This often changes your IP address if you have a dynamic one.
If you have a genuine reason to be worried at any time, then change your internet provider. that changes your IP address. 🙂
Pete
Thanks Pete for your comment. Or, don’t do anything on the internet that you shouldn’t. (or anything that would get the FBI onto you)
Hi Jack
Actually child from my locality is lost n that child recently contact me through facebook,he didnt share information abt where he is n his parents r worried,so can we find him through IP address?
If possible plz tell me the procedure…..
Contact your police about the report and see if they can help find him.
Or, ask where he is, or see if you can find is location if he has enabled geolocations on is messages and status updates.
actuallly sumone became 2 knw abt mi ip address thoro fake fb id nw dat person knw mi exact location nd havin doubts.plz gve me the best suggestion 2 solve ds damn prblm nd den dat person no longer hav any doubt!
I would find it very hard that they got your address from a Fake FB account – more likely, you would have put your address on Facebook somewhere, such as a place, or an event.
Hi,I go to chat rooms a lot,and I answer some questions about myself if someone asks me in private chat; Can anyone hack me without I understand? How to know they have detected my IP?I have also heard they can control my webcam, too,is it true?By the way I have McAfee,it is regularly updated with firewall on and no treats is detected so far by it.Is my computer spied? How to prevent? Please help me 🙁
Yes, it’s possible for someone to control your webcam, but it’s very unlikely. Plus, you will see the light on if someone is watching it.
Most chat rooms are anonymous so people you talk to can only find information about you if you tell them the information.
If you don’t tell them personal information about yourself, they won’t have any information about you.
Hiya Jack, can you please tell me if any info can be found by inspecting the element of a facebook picture being uploaded by someone who is not my friend please? info such as facebook log in email address or isp…..or anything? lol many thanks xx
Hi,
Yes, it is possible, but you need someone who is friends with them, otherwise it won’t work. Send me the link using my contact form, and I can work it out for you.
Otherwise, if your FB image is in the URL format
https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/YYYYYY_XXXXXXXXXXXXXX_YYYYYYYYYYYYY_n.jpg
Simply put the XXXX number at the end of http://www.facebook.com/ and it will show the profile, but only if the photo is public or you have permission to view it.
So I was on this chat thing, and I accidentally clicked a link and this weird 9 year old was jacking off! ƒ?½_ƒ?½ so another guy that happened to be on this thing (tinychat, I believe) said I was a pedo guy, said he found my IP and said he reported me and told me to wait 48 hours. Then I was really scared. Will he actually report me and will police come to my door? This happened about 22 hours ago. I am 12 years old, and I was on a “club penguin” (a virtual website for kids) related website and I clicked the link. The weird guy on tinychat told me to put up my cam so he can see it was an actual 12 year old, but I said no because I didn’t want him to see me! And he said that he reported me. HELP!!!!
Hi Joey, has anything happened yet?
Basically, I’m trying to go to a website and appear as different households on a regular basis.
For example, to appear as a different household every other day or so that the site cannot detect that the same household has visited the site more than once. Does switching IP’s over and over help to do so?
Thank you.
Yes, it will help. But if someone is trying to catch you, they can because you also send other information over that could potentially be crossed referenced.

Hello!
First of all I would like to say CONGRATULATIONS for the wonderful explain. And sorry about my english too.
So, actually I have 3 questions and I hope you could help me to find the answers.
– You wrote that “Someone in one country, can mask their IP (…) it makes it much more difficult to track” If I understood well, it is difficult it means is possible, right? And how?
– Second question is what do you think about Super Hide IP?
– Third, if I hide my MAC adress with a software does my router register that I was connected with my computer?
Hi
1) You can use Proxies or services like TOR, so yes, it’s possible
2) I’ve never heard of them, so I can’t comment
3) Either nothing, it won’t connect, or what ever MAC address you assign.
Hope this answers your questions.
Hi There
I have a friend who has had her computer stolen and I had Logmein on it, the computer is still active as I can see when its logged on, I have tried once to log in and he saw me so now I have been writing to the Moiami police to tell them but no responce,
My Question is who can I contact to get the information of his IP, the IP trackers from goolge are not accurate enough
comcast is the SP but they say it must come from authorities
help
Log me in should have that information. If they log in to your Gmail, they will have their IP address they are using.
Maybe you can install PreyProject on it through Logmein and get the information that way?
Jack cola you are scaring these people lol. Most of these issues aren’t serious
Well I don’t want to say no, it’s not possible when it is. BUT, it’s very unlikely for someone to find your home address through their IP address. BUT, it is possible.
hey….
actually you won’t able to catch the exact spot from where the IP is hosted. Because the one you are viewing on screen would be ISP’s external IP address with which you only can find the ISP provider and what you need is internal or local host IP which you are unable to view remotely. Yet,you can obtain home address and related info with the help of ISP (if properly approached with valid reason) since you know their IP (External). It is possible with IP-details.com where you can find the details (ISP,Location & Country) of given IP
Thanks for your input Sat!
Thanks Sat
I have all but given up for now, I have written 7 online crime reports to Miami Beach police and no response, I am going to wait for the bugger to be off guard and log in Take a pic or get more info and change the passwords?
dont know what else to do

Hi Jack
I’ve reently had my account closed by an online gaming site…i reckon for winning too much! i want to open another account…can they recognise me by my IP address even though I have a wireless set-up and dynamic IP address?
thanks!
If you restart your modem to get a new IP address, or delete your web browser cache and cookies, then you can open another account.
You may also want to use a different email, credit card number, address and phone number in your new application.
Hi there,
I have been receiving unsolicited emails, texts, physical mail etc to my work address. I have identified an IP address and the exact time my details were entered into the website (Free-choice.com.au) Is there a way I can identify the person or owner of this IP. The IP is 122.106.44.250 and it was entered on 26/5/12 at 23:25:14 – I obtained these details via a marketing company who have contacted their partners and stopped the bombardment. Any ideas please?? Thanks
I would contact Optus with this information, as they are the owner of the IP address to see who is sending your spam.
Let me know how it goes.
Do you know how to find out who is behind a fake facebook profile? via tracking IP address?
Hi, check out jackcola-network.com/iplog/
Tracing a person’s complete location through IP address is not possible. But a general geographic location with latitude, longitude, Country, state, zone, pin code, etc. can be got from an IP address. you guys can visit http://www.ip-details.com to know the location of a particular IP.
That site doesn’t nessessary say the correct information. For example, for me, I am 3000km away to where it says I am.
I just wanted to ask if someone can get my personal information such as my residential address or cell no. through facebook. what is the maximum information he can get through my facebook account?
Hi,
If you have location tracking turned on, and you access Facebook on your phone from home, when you chat to someone, your location will be provided to them
Thank u so much but how would I know if my location tracking is turned on or not?
Hi,
When on the Facebook App on your mobile, go into the App settings (not the settings Facebook itself) and you will find an option “Messenger Location Service” change that too off. Also, make sure when you talk to people, the blue arrow is grey so your location won’t be sent.
I was on anon on tumblr and I said someone a question and I wasn’t being mean I just said she had to grow up but I have this person on fb and they said they knew who it was (me) because she used anon tracker. Would this person be able to find out my adress? Thankyou

3) Yes, it should
Hello, I have been the target of a family member who fits the profile of a genuine sociopath (a real one, not just name calling) I borrowed her moms computer one day and found all kinds of personal and odd information about me that made no sense for anyone to want to have.
Every year during school holidays and breaks my computers will show that I have been broke into… and gmail account will be broke into soon there after and the Ip address will say S. CAROLINA AND when I trace it, it shows from Texas. I am going to file a complaint with police and I may take her to court over harassment and child services false claims of abuse that have put me through hell… Is there away this ip address can be traced to the real location? Even if I could trace to Georgia will be helpful. Your help with this will help me stop this 4 year ongoing harassment of this sociopath who is a school counselor in pelham Georgia and her brother and I are terrified for the kids she is coming in contact with each day and we hope we can at least alert proper individuals so at least eyes will be on her and she will at least be watched for any sociopath behavior with these children .
Thank you
Ip address is 64.134.178.102

Hi Lisa,
If you are concerned about public safety for other children around this person, maybe you should file a complain with the school to see if there could be an investigation on here.
Hi friend…. Thanks for your information about IP address. You said ISPs provide IP address for their clients when they go to internet. My question is do the client have their own IP address without using Internet? How ISPs give a new IP based on their own system IP?

Hi, every internet connected devices have an IP address. IP addresses are used to find and located computers, so computers can send and receive data between them. ISP’s own the IP addresses and assign them to customers, either dynamically or statically as mentioned in the article.
For people to access the internet, they need an IP address. People can use proxies or VPN’s to connect their computer to another network and use someone elses external IP address.
People and ISP’s don’t own an IP address, they lease them through ICANN. ISP will have a block of IP addresses they give out to people to use. You may have heard about IPv4 and IPv6, will all the IP addresses in IPv4 are almost gone, so IPv6 is a new format of IP addresses.
Thanks, So I have a stalker. She knows my IP address and works for a security company. My little boy and I have had to move 6 times because she sends me emails with my correct addresses and begins calling several times to my new phone numbers. What I understand from you is that legally she was to get a court order or warrant and what she is doing is illegal by using her position with the security company. Do you think I could sue her or have her arrested?
Hi,
I suggest you get an AVO against your stalker. You might also have a mole in your friendship group telling your stalker where you move, or your new phone numbers. Just something you might have not thought about.
