Can People Find My Home Address Through My IP Address?
Many people on the internet ask this question, so today; I am going to answer it for once and for all.
So… Can people find out who you are through your IP Address? The simple answer is yes. But first, let’s understand what an IP Address is, the different types of IP Addresses, and then how people can find out your home address through your IP.
What Is An IP Address?
Under IPv4, an IP Address is a bunch of numbers that is in the format of XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX. For example: 124.136.56.164. However, since the world is running short of IP Addresses (we’ll probably run out by the end of 2011), IPv6 has been created in which IP Addresses are displayed as group of four hexadecimal digits separated by colons. For example: 2001:db8:1f70::999:de8:7648:6e8. For more information about IPv6, visit Wikipedia.
What are IP Addresses Used For?
IP Addresses are used to connect computers to each other. For example, your ISP will assign you either a static or dynamic IP Address which you will use to connect your computer or home network to the internet. If your home network has more than one computer in it, your ISP will not assign each of your computers an IP Address. Your router will assign each computer in your network a LAN IP. This IP Address is a little different as it will usually start with a 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x.
Static IP? Dynamic IP? What’s the Difference?
Basically a Static IP Address never changes, whereas a Dynamic IP Address does change. Businesses usually require a static IP Address so they can host servers such as web servers, so when you visit a domain name, the DNS server (Domain Name Server) finds out what the IP Address is and directs you to that server. Imagine if you had a dynamic IP Address that always changes, you wouldn’t be able to locate that server or website.
Most residential customers will be assigned dynamic IP Addresses by their ISP. The reason being is that they don’t need to run servers and it’s easier to manage.
What’s better – Dynamic or Static?
It’s really depends on what you require as each have their pro’s and con’s. For example, if you want to host a web server, a static IP Address will be better suited, but a dynamic IP will be better if you constantly get blocked by a firewall as you can reset your modem and get a new IP Address and re-access the site. But you can’t do that with a static IP Address as your IP Address remains the same.
So can people find out my home address through my IP Address?
If someone wants to find out where you live, first, they will need to know your IP Address and the date and time when you accessed something (it’s easy to get, read below). Every time you visit a website, the website would probably record your IP Address. That being said, to identify you from the other 10000 visitors can be a bit tricky, so if you log into an account, they will most probably have your username or address recorded so they can associate your account details to your IP Address.
But by someone just having your IP Address, it is possible to track down who you are from your IP Address, but for privacy issues, not many people can do it. If someone wants to find your address, they will need a court order or a warrant to access the information from your ISP. With this, your the ISP can lookup who used what particularly ISP at a given time and date. They will then look up your billing and account details to find out what address you have.
Also, each ISP and countries are assigned with a particular IP range, thus you can use services like Trasir to find out who your ISP is and what country and region you are from.
So that is how people can find your address from your IP Address. Please keep in mind, to find legally get your personal details from your IP Address, they will need to go through some form of court order to receive permission to get these details.
Please be aware, that there maybe people who work with these agencies (ISP, Police etc) that may be able to attain these details through inside information.
So Where Do I Find My IP Address? What is my IP?
It is very easy to find your IP Address, and if I go to a services like CanYouSeeMe.org it will get my IP Address for me and display it. When you visit it on another computer on another network, it will show you your IP Address you are using to connect to the internet. Other services like You Get Signal will show a geophysical map of your location in which your IP Address is assigned, which can be used as an extremely useful tool to track IP Addresses and to trace IP locations.
IP Addresses Can Be Disguised
It is important to note, that IP addresses can be spoofed. Someone in one country, can mask their IP address to show that they are in another country. When someone does this, it makes it much more difficult to track where that person is actually located. I suggest you read “How To Use a Fake IP Address & Mask Yourself Online” and “6 Tips On How To Unblock A Web Page From Behind A Firewall“.
Hello,
I’ve been searching for a friend through my IPhone’s safari search engine can those company’s that say,” Who’s been Looking for you…Find out” really have my name and location??
Usually, those types of services are spam.
I have report this case to the bank but they link back the ip address to my house. How is this posible. And what can I do to change my ip address so the bank would not supect its someone from my house
Usually a simple restart of your modem will do the trick to get a new IP address from your ISP.
Your bank may have contacted your ISP and saw which customer had that IP address at the time, thus giving out you home address.
Or, when you reported it to your bank, you did so under your account name, thus the bank just had to look up their records to see where you live.
someone use my credit card online and didnt an unknown transaction. the bank check the ip address is from my house. is it possible? how can i change my ip address so that i wont be track?
In responding to this comment, the electronic transaction would have record the IP address that made the transaction with the credit card. This transaction could have been from the same IP address you logged into when checking your bank statement, thus saying the transaction came from your house.
The bank suspect that I have make the transaction. I don’t understant I did not make the transection. I have log in police report and done a report with the bank. Now what can I do?
Before I found out the ip address that make the transection is from my house
Could there be someone in your house that has access to your computers who could have made the transaction?
Try checking back on your browsers history logs to see if the online backing site was accessed at the time of the transaction.
The bank is only suspects – that doesn’t mean it is proof. Make them show you proof.
I stay alone. No history of any banking done during that time. The bank say that this transection is done from my house ip address and they say that the ip address is the proof. If not they say I’m working with another party to make this unknown transection. They want me to pay for that transection coz it worth 5k usd
My bank requires you to enter a confirmation code which is SMS’d to your mobile, which you must enter before you can transfer funds to other bank accounts.
Can you ask your bank to reverse the transaction then? They should be able to.
Also, can you ask them, and find out who the payment was actually too?
My bank don’t sms and code. The payment is made to a company which sell apple product. They buy 8 10 ipad with it. They can’t reverse the transection because they say the payment went through the company account
Then, try to contact the bank to get the companies transaction ID / reference number.
Then, contact the company, quoting this number, and ask them to put the order on hold or try to cancel the order, explaining your situation, or change the delivery address (or find out where it is being delivered too.
Then contact the bank, and prove that the address isn’t yours, and the order is fraudulent, and then contact the police.
i have contact the company. they send it somewhere within 80km radius in my house. they have send. the bank suspect that i have a partner with some people for it. they say ip address is more that enough to prove that i did that transaction. furthermore i have make a bit fuse with the credit card fraud department, and did a police report for it. one of my friend ask me to pay for it because i may get into credit card fraud problems.
Sounds tricky.
I guess your best bet is to contact the police, and get them to do a search for the items at the house. But they could have removed the items anyway.
Have you tried contacting your credit card provider (not bank) – so Visa, Mastercard, Dinners Club etc?
No. Contac them and say what? Should I bring this case to the court? But they say they got my ip address
Contact them and say there has been a fraudulent transaction on your credit card and they may be able to help you track it down. There should be a number on the back you should ring.
See what the police can do about it, if they can’t do anything, and the bank, the credit card provider, and the company can’t do anything, or won’t do anything, and you can prove it wasn’t you, then you could consider taking out a court order.
But remember, I’m only providing advice – it’s up to you whether you want to take action on it.
is ip address enough to pin it on you?
It’s a strong case, but can they prove you had that IP address at the time of the transaction?
If they have a record of you making a legitimate transaction with the same IP address, there case is strong. If they don’t, they will need to prove that by getting in contact with your ISP. What you might want to do, is ask the bank for the IP address that made the transaction, and ask your ISP for the IP address your internet account was assigned at that time. If they don’t match, you have proof that you didn’t make the transaction. If they do match, you could possibly have a virus, or your wireless network is unsecured and someone has stolen your bank details.
Hello, so my friend’s facebook page was stolen, and (s)he will not give it back. Do you know how I could possibly get the hacker’s IP so I could give it to the owner of the page? Or is this illegal or
wrong to do? Please help, PLEASE!
How exactly was your Facebook page stolen? Did someone else remove you has an Administrator?
Having the IP address of the hacker is worthless when it comes from Facebook.
Just post on the Pages wall saying “give my page back”
Hello
Ive been receiving messages from someone on facebook who I dont know, they have set up a profile with no picture and no information , other than a false name.
They have been telling me partner is cheating and have given specific details, so I know its not just s spam message.
Is there any way of tracing them?
I doubt facebook will disclose such information to me.
thanks to anyway who can put me out of my misery 🙁
I would just ask them personal questions, not about there relationship, but about them.
E.g How do you know? Where did you find out?, Who told you, my partner, or the person who they are cheating on?
But don’t ask these questions all at once, throw them in every so often.
i need to find real address of my friend i really want to meet him in his country can u help me?
Can you not just ask them? Or one step more, go through their friend lists and ask the persons friends?
Not really that ethical to do, but it can work. Just make sure you have a legitimate reason why you want their address.
hi sir,

someone has cancelled our works broadband account stating that the company is bust therefore the account is no longer needed. this is untrue and it has taken us 5 days to get things back up and running. we believe it is the bosses soon to be x brother in law who used to host the account and is an IT whiz. we have been told the ip address (which is a plusnet account) and have complained. can we track down where this mail originally came from. the x brother in law works for a large company and travels a lot, we assume this mail has gone through different addresses as we know he was not in nottingham when it was sent
I suggest you contact the ISP and ask who authorised the disconnection.
When you call them up, you have to prove your identity, and possibly secrete questions.
If only one person knows that information, it must have been them. Also, tell them to go back on past recorders, to see if the voice of the call is the same.
If he sends mail through the work email address, an administrator will be able to read his emails.
i have his ip address i want to find his address how to do coz i want him back to talk with me or maybe i wll go to meet him in his country i really miss him a lot pls help me please, thanks so much
101.212.72.60

The IP address is from India
Hi please help, I’m only 14.
I know a girls Facebook password and I have logged in on it a few times but never said anything I have only read mails and looked at other peoples pages, now this girl is claiming someone has hacked her Facebook and she has said she has reported it to Facebook and is contacting the police.
I am so worried that I am going to get into trouble with the law or would they just find out who the actual hacker is , aparently she is also going to the police for abusive comments on a spillit page that she claims not to have made, please help have never did anything on her account apart from read mails but I am so scared.
Thanks
Cassidy
The only thing you pretty much can do is to confess. Tell her and prove that you did not do anything on her Facebook except for looking at emails. That way she’ll understand.
Good luck.
2 Options:
1) Confess, and hope she won’t take it any futher
2) Don’t say anything an hope she is bluffing, and hope even more that they don’t try and find out that it was you.
But if you logged onto your Facebook account as well as her’s after each other, and on the same computer, they can just compare IP addresses and find out it was you.
Have a read of some of these posts http://www.jackcola.org/faq?catid=2&faqid=37. She could have enabled logging so every time you log in, she receives an email.
Hi, I would like to know if it’s possible for someone to claim he is in England but his IP address says he is in Malaysia? I actually received two emails from this person and he swears he is in England, in fact he is using a UK mobile number that starts with +4479 (not the redirect #+4470). The first email’s IP address is Phoenix, Arizona, USA with Nobis Technology Group, Ubiquity Server Solutions New York as provider. The second email’s IP address is Klang, Selangor, Malaysia with Packet One Networks (M) Sdn as provider.
How is this possible, when the mails were sent to me almost on the same day from the same person who claims he is in Connecticut, Scotland in England?
Please enlighten me on this. Many thanks!
He may be masking his IP address.
Hi,
It could always be possible if he is using a VPN or proxy servers. Plus, are you sure you got the right IP address? You may have got the email servers IP address, not the actual clients.
Jack
hello,
so ive recently been somewhat of a victim to identity theft. just for clarification purposes ill tell you a lil backround. i had my credit card company call me about some suspicious activity on the account. they canceled my card and sent me a new one. i didnt think much of it because its happened before and it usually stops when the card number isnt any good any more. but then i got a call from an insurance agent the same day saying i had requested an insurance quote the night before for an audi (that was first clue cause id never drive an audi) but it really got my attention when the agent repeated back to me all my personal info when i told him i didnt request a quote. address, phone number, full name, etc. so hears where i need your help…. all the information supplied to the agent was correct about me EXCEPT my email address. it was some random gmail account. so im 99.9% sure that whoever owns that email account has got all my personal info. ive found the ip address of the gmail account and have tried to do these reverse email and ip address lookups from sites that say they can tell you the names and addresses to email accounts owners but they all only tell me the location and address to the server, which is google, in mountian view, california. at first i thought that the perp lived in mountain view because one of the fraudulent charges on my credit card was located in mountian view california. which may still be the case. or maybe googles new privacy policy said in fine print somewhere that they can share my personal info with google employees and one of them has got my info and is using my credit card around town!?!? LOL i guess my question is that if theres any way to find out more information about someone only having there ip address?
I wouldn’t think it would be a Google employee going on a shopping spree.
I’m not sure how much I can help you apart from alerting your bank or or other companies to keep a watch over your account activity for suspicious information.
I strongly suggest you visit http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/microsites/idtheft/ and take some of their advice and follow their instructions.

Is it possible for adverts to know my postal code?
Depends who is the Ad Network and whether or not they know your address. For example, Google Ads might not your post code if you provide your address in Gmail or Google+ for example.
Hi, two of my friends and I were playing a prank joke on another one of my friends for april fools by sending her an email saying it was from her secret admirer. The joke went perfectly, so we actually kept going with it. we set up a fake email account to email her. Now for some reason, she’s getting mad with her secret admirer, and said she’s going to track the IP address and find out where he (who is really me) lives ! Her dad is a lawyer, and she has a lot of friends who are really into computers. I know you said you’ll need a court order to find out a home address through an ip address. But can any of her dads friends or her friends accesst that information ?
I am not sure how far your went, but shouldn’t you better tell her that it is you before “lawyers” come into it only to find out it was you.
There is three ways this could go:
1) She find it humorous and will still be your friend
2) She doesn’t find it that nice and won’t be friends with you any more
3) She will be really annoyed and get her dad involved, and her dad will either take it further or ignore it.
It really depends on how far she will take it and that’s something you can only know, and you just have to make the right decision based on what you think she will do.
So you can tell her now, don’t tell her and hope she doesn’t take things further, or don’t tell her and wait for the cops to turn up on your door (if they find you).
Also, you have to take into account what your other two friends do. They might squeal on your first.
Can lawyers or police officers find ip addresses for their friends, and then find the home address from it? Do they have access to do this secretly, or do even they need to get court orders to do this as well?
I’m not sure… Depends what police department you go to and how high up they are I guess. Lawyers no, police maybe.
Police say they need a court order, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they just do it anyway because they can. Well the Police Officers probably won’t, but the police in charge of IT systems probably.
I’ve had the police contact me once for a post I published. http://www.jackcola.org/blog/88-out-of-the-blue-email-it-was-from-the-police-law-enforcement
But ISP’s would have a better chance of finding their ‘friends’ home address.
Hi Jack,
I can see that you are a guru in IP addresses. I have a question, I got email from 2 email addresses (both are hotmail account with different ids). I tracked the IP addresses and they were 58.111.207.12 & 58.106.249.90. Does this mean they can be from the same person using different id’s.
Pls help me.
Jay
I have a feeling that those IP addresses are assigned to mobile broadband devices (such as smart phones). I know my Mobile phone with Virgin has the IP addresses range starting with 58.xx.xx.xx
So it could be possible 1 person sending you two emails after his phone disconnected from the internet and released the IP address or the email is from 2 completely different people.
Make sense?
if someone hacks a facebook account and starts doing status updates etc is there a way to find out where the person was when he/she did this.
any help would be great, this is a serious matter and things were posted that are not appropriate. thank you!
Yes, it’s possible to find the location. Have a read of this http://www.jackcola.org/faq?catid=2&faqid=31 and the other FAQ’s I have http://www.jackcola.org/faq
But keep in mind, the locations are only estimates and could be wrong.
I recently just played modern warfare on my ps3,
Where I came across a very ignorant individual. During this heated battle, he asked me where I lived, and said forget it I’ll find it. I told him NC. I used the trasir.com site, and was able to pull my IP address from that. Is there anyway for him to find out my IP address through a PS3, and if so, can my home address be found through it. When I used my iPhone with the longitude, and latitude on google, I was able to pinpoint my location, but no address was listed. Please help me!!! :Pirate:
:ooo:
Hi jack. i got a case where someone make a new twitter account and i don’t know who he/she is. and that account. that account just say a bad things about my friends and i want to know who it is..
Do you know how to find IP address through Twitter account? Will you suggest me a help for this. Please help me and my friend.
Thank you so much for reading this
Hi Semi,
Make sure you report the account for spam. Off memory, doing this also blocks you, so make sure you sign out if you need to view it again.
To get their IP address, you can do this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCHAKPX56DE, but this is quite advanced, and you have to ensure, only they can click the link.
The other thing you can hope for is if they provide GPS data when they send the tweet. Then you will know where they sent the tweet from.
Jack
hi,

Pz tell me if someone using fake id from any cyber cafe then how it is posibl to track him?if v get the address of cafe then how it is posibal to track the person bcz many people use that computer on the cafe.
It’s quite hard to track an individual who uses an internet cafe.
What you can do, is go to the cafe and ask who was using the computer at this particular time as they were conducting fraudulent activities.
They may have a log of who uses the computer, such as credit card details.

If you have enabled web history, you will be able to find it on web history at https://www.google.com/history.
Otherwise, if you press Control+H on your keyboard, it will show a list of sites that you have recently visited, assuming your haven’t cleared the data manually, or set it to clear it when you close your web browser.
