Visiting the town of Cassis on French Riviera

Posted by on November 6, 2012

Cassis is famous for its cliffs, and great wines, so of course, it’s very hilly. Nevertheless, it’s a great town. Every restaurant on the harbour serves Oysters in a bowl of chips. We had a meal at one of these restaurants (can’t remember which one). A bowl of Oysters and Chips for 10 Euro’s. Can’t beat that.

However, finding a caravan park proved difficult, as well as driving the roads. In Cassis, you really have to know where you are going, because there are a lot of “No Campervans” and “No trucks” signs all over the place. There’s only one road in, and another road out. Needless to say, we drove around nearly every single street.

Camping Les Cigales

You don’t get much of a choice of which campsite you’d like to stay at. There’s only one, Camping Les Cigales. This is at the very top of the hill, 1Km away from the town centre, up a really, steep hill. And I mean steep. Trying to carry groceries up that hill in near 40 degree whether, it was tough.

The campsite is very basic, free wifi, and only one toilet block. It also was the first time I used a Squat Toilet as they didn’t provide a normal toilet. And let me just say, I didn’t enjoy the experience at all. I will spare everyone the details of what happened.

The Cassis Cliffs

After spending one night, it was time to move on. We decided to venture up to the top of the cliffs and see where it takes us, which ended up being La Ciotat, our next stop. Here are some photo’s looking down from the cliffs.
