On our way to Paris – Express from Germany

Posted by on September 20, 2012

After spending two days looking at Hilter’s House and the Concentration Camp in Dachau, we were on our way, express to Paris to pickup our third traveller who was flying in from Australia.

Sleeping in the car

We left the Concentration Camp around 4pm and drove towards Paris. It’s a long drive. We ended up entering Paris and we ended up sleeping in the car outside a Petrol station for about 8 hours. For a car and two people, it was pretty comfy, but I wouldn’t say it was the best night sleep I’ve had.\

WiFi is hard to find in France

Since we’ve been driving for a long time, we needed to contact our third traveller, and since my only affordable way of contract was through the internet, and since the internet dropped out at Hotel Hubertus, we ended up stopping at every petrol station in France to see if they offer Wi-Fi.  Out of say the 5 petrol stations we stopped at, no one had it. In fact, they didn’t know what “Y-Fi” was, they pronounced it as “Wif-Fee”. It sounded so strange….

Contacting Home

I tried to SMS an Australian mobile, but it never went through. I later released, if you have a stored contact in your Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc, and you sent a message by changing the number to international format using +614 instead of 04, when you send the SMS, the phone will automatically convert the number back to 04 – thus disallowing me to send any SMS messages to Australia. In the end, I rang the mobile. A 30 second call (well, could have been up to a minute), only cost 1.62 euro’s through TIM IT. An Italy Sim Card calling from France to an Australian Mobile number – that’s a lot cheaper than Roaming with an Australian Mobile SIM.

Tolls

For those who do end up driving from Germany to Paris, we ended up paying about 50 euro’s in using the Toll roads driving along the A4.

Finding Accommodation

Since we arrived in Paris, we drove to the Gates of Disneyland Paris – because we can, and then found some nearby accommodation, as we awaited for the flight to arrive at 7am in the morning at Paris Airport.

We ended up staying at the Premiere Classe Hotel in Meaux, which was a 1 star hotel which for two people cost $53.36AUD, which is really cheap compared to our last hotel we stayed at – then again, more expensive then sleeping in the car on the side of the road.

Located here, it provided free Wi-Fi, and the beds were Ok. But if you are a bit on the large and heavy sides of things, I wouldn’t recommend staying here as the bathroom are smaller than a shower/toilet in a caravan. So small, that the entire floor will be wet, and you have to ensure you put the toilet seat down, otherwise it will be saturated when someone has a shower. But for a cheap, one night accomidation for a single person, it will be great. It’s also a 24 hour hotel with these cool machines.

Dinner

This hotel doesn’t have a restaurant, but they point you to the restaurant at the hotel next door, which you will get 15% off your meal anyway. When the place lacks in accommodation, they excel in the food. This was one of the nicest (a reasonably priced) meals. The meal we purchased was like the chef’s plate which you got a steak and a choice of the salad buffet or the dessert buffet. The steak was nice, and the dessert… oh… I wish I wasn’t so full. Between the two of us, we polished off nearly the whole dessert bar. Even the water was nice. It was the best cold glass bottle of Vital water I ever had.
